The Umbwe Route, nicknamed the “Double Whiskey Route”, is considered the most challenging and direct route on Kilimanjaro – making it suitable only for climbers with high-altitude experience who understand how their bodies respond in such conditions.
It starts on the southern side of Kilimanjaro and on the third day, just before the Barranco Wall, it joins the Lemosho and Machame Routes. A key feature of the Umbwe Route is that during the first two days, you are unlikely to encounter other trekkers. The route is available in 6- or 7-day options, with the 7-day option recommended for those without prior acclimatization.
Climbers who choose the Umbwe Route seek a true challenge and are rewarded with peace, solitude, and spectacular landscapes. Few other routes offer such intense impressions and untouched wilderness.
